Shithead

October 24, 2013 Drinking Games

The aptly fucking named. This is a card game for two to six players, though four players is the sweet spot.

The dealer is randomly selected for the first hand. The deal rotates clockwise after each hand.

  1. The dealer deals a row of three face-down cards to each player, one at a time.
  2. The dealer deals three cards face-up to each player, one at a time, covering the face-down cards.
  3. The dealer deals a three card hand face-down to each player, one at a time.

Any cards remaining undealt are placed face down to form a draw pile. The players pick up their three card hands and look at them.

Before play each player may exchange any number of cards from the hand with her face-up cards. A player may never look at the face-down cards until they are played.

The first player is whoever you hate the most from the group assembled. Don’t be nice, there’s beer at stake. That player begins a discard pile on the table, playing face-up from their hand any number of cards of the same rank, and taking cards from the draw pile to replenish their hand to three cards. You must have three cards in your hand as long as there’re cards to draw from the pile.

Taking turns clockwise, each player must either play a card or a set of equal cards face up on top of the discard pile, or pick up the pile. The card or cards played must be of equal to or of higher rank than previous play. This continues until some dick is unable to equal or beat the previous play, at which point they miss their go and pick up the discard pile. The next player then starts a fresh pile.

As long as you begin your turn with cards in your hand, you’re not allowed to play from the cards you have on the table; you can only play from the cards in your hand on that turn. If you ain’t got no cards left in your hand, and there’s none left to pick up, you can play from your face up cards, but it has to be a legal move or you pick up the discards. When those three are gone then it’s pot luck from your face down cards.

The Effects of the Cards

Where this gets fun. Different cards have different effects, like so:

2 – This can be played any time, and lets the next player put down any card they fancy.

7 – Reverses the order of play

8 – The next player misses their go.

10 –Burns the deck, getting rid of the current discard pile.

Four-of-a-kind – also burns the deck, like with a 10.

Jack – Makes the next player pick up the entire discard pile before they play.

The winner is the first one to get rid of all their cards. They get to be dealer next time. The last person to get rid of all their cards is the Shithead and starts the next play. They can also be given a forfeit by the winner.
